Now that we’re a couple of weeks into January I have finally stopped longing for a return to Christmas and am getting so excited for Spring. It’s still deathly dark in the mornings and absolutely freezing (as I type it is actually snowing outside!) but I can almost sense Springs arrival in the air.
A new season brings with it new fashion and after layering up in chunky knits and cosy coats for what feels like a never ending winter, I am ready to embrace all that Spring has to offer. As with any new season, there are lots of new trends for SS18 as well as some you might already be familiar with!
There’s no better time to rethink your wardrobe than the start of a new year so I’ve rounded up a couple of my favourite trends below. I have chosen the trends I feel are most wearable as well as some that are carrying over from last season. Meaning you will likely already have some of these pieces in your wardrobe. New trends don’t always have to mean buying a whole new wardrobe! And who doesn’t love a bit of shopping your own closet?!
Athleisure
A favourite with many of our go-to street stylers, this trend is a carry over from Autumn Winter meaning you will hopefully already have some pieces in your wardrobe. This sporty trend is an easy to wear style essential that looks set to stick around for Spring Summer. To nail this trend think jogger trousers, trackie tops, go faster chevrons and sporty stripes, and tube socks. Of course going head to toe Sporty Spice isn’t for everyone so add subtle nods to the trend to your outfits instead. Try joggers with a crisp white shirt and sling back kitten heels for a preppy put-together take on athletic wear.
- Tracksuit top, Maje; 2. Jogging trousers, Zara; 3. Ankle panel sock boots, & other stories; 4. Cobalt blue puffer jacket, Topshop; 5. Panther belt bag, Topshop.
Polka Dots
Another trend carrying through from last season is polka dots. Polka dot print is one of those classics that never really goes out of style and autumn winter saw a real resurgence in its popularity (check out my blog from last year on how dots replaced gingham as our favourite print). The high street is going dotty for Spring and the print is on everything from skirts and shirts to bags and boots. Feeling bold? Mix your polka dots with another clashing print like leopard for extra style points.
- Spotted hanky hem skirt, Topshop; 2. Polka dot ankle boots, Zara; 3. Yellow polka dot blouse, New Look; 4. Shadow spot print blouse, Topshop; 5. Embellished city bag, Zara.
Western
Seen on catwalks from Calvin Klein to Acne Studios, all things Western inspired is another big trend for SS18. And before you balk at the idea of dressing like an extra from a spaghetti western, embracing this trend can be as subtle as adding a neckerchief to your outfit. To crack this trend think belt buckles, plaid, cowboy boots, indigo denim, studs, leather and fringing. The great thing about these elements is that you can pick your favourite for a subtle nod to the trend or you can wear all together for an all out Western look (tho be warned there is a danger of looking like John Wayne with the latter approach).
1. Studded mixed jacket, Mango; 2. Wide denim tie belt trousers, H&M; 3. Stud ankle boots, & other stories; 4. Western buckle cross body bag, New Look; 5. Colourblock western shirt, Topshop.
Lilac
Pastels are always big news for Spring Summer and this year is no different. Expect to see an array of the prettiest shades from pink and lemon to duck egg blue. For me though, lilac is the standout colour thanks in no small part to Pantone naming Ultra Violet as their colour of the year for 2018. Lilac has never been a colour I’ve worn much of so I’ll be tentatively dipping my toe into this trend. If you’re still on the fence about it too start by introducing one lilac element such as a sweater or trousers into your outfit. Of course, if you’re feeling bold you can always go head to toe like we saw on the catwalks at Tibi and Victoria Beckham.
- High waist palazzo trousers, Mango; 2. Hibiscus ankle boots, Topshop; 3. Mohair blend jumper, H&M; 4. Frill blouse, & other stories; 5. Vans old skool trainers, Asos.
Stylishly yours,
Trish xx
